If you plan to project these Tombstone or Christmas Tree shows onto a cutout like those shown in the videos, download our free outline templates. Simply project the template onto foam board or plywood, trace it, and cut it out. Since every show is designed to the same dimensions, all future purchases will align with your cutout, making setup quick and easy.
If you're projecting onto a large flat surface such as a fence or garage door, you won't need these templates. They're only recommended for cutout props, where precise alignment creates the best projection mapping effect.

I usually recommend either white or a light color such as gray.
Luckily since these are much smaller sized vs the full house shows, you can use just about any projector. The brighter, obviously the better but any budget projector would do just fine.
This isn't a straightforward answer as it really depends on the projectors "throw ratio" and the size you want the projections to be. With that said, The "average" projector is a standard-throw model with a throw ratio ranging between 1.2:1 and 1.5:1. This means that for every 1 foot of image width, the projector must be placed 1.2 to 1.5 feet away from the screen. So as an example if the tombstones are 8 feet wide, the average projector will need to be 9.6-12 feet back. If the trees are 15 feet wide, the projector will need to be 18-22.5 feet back. NOW, if these are too far back for your yard, look into a "short throw projector". Short throws are usually a bit more money but the distance back is usually 1/2 that as mentioned above if not more!
Above, you can download a free outline template. Simply project the outline onto what ever material you want to project on, trace it, then cut it out. The sizing doesn't mater as long as the aspect ratio stays the same. You can have the tombstones all done on 1 4x8 foam board, or you can do two boards side by side while projecting the template making them even bigger! I have done 3 tombstones on one board and 2 on the other.
I personally use 2 inch thick foam boards from Home Depot for the tombstones. For the trees, since I believe they look better much larger, the foam boards get flimsy so I went with wood. I've done many versions such as plywood painted white, old fence pannels, and even shiplap!
Alignment can be tricky. The first recommendation is moving/angle the projector until it gets closer. Sometimes moving the cutouts individually to the sides/forward/back will do the trick. If it's still off, then go into your projectors settings and see if it has alignment adjustment tools such as keystoning or corner adjustment. Often times messing with these will do the trick. Lastly, if none of these are working.. check out this link below. This free outliner tool can be used (different from the outline templates). This was made for full house outlining but can be used with these props as well. Simply trace out the trees/tombs, send the outline to me, send me your purchase reference number or full name so I can see what was purchased, and then I can re-render and send the shows to your outline so everything plays back aligned.
A projector enclosure isn't required, but it is highly recommended if you plan to leave your projector outside for extended periods. An enclosure helps protect it from rain, snow, dust, theft, and accidental damage. If you only set your projector outside during show hours and bring it inside afterward, an enclosure may not be necessary.
